The Coptic Parliament – Its Inevitability and Purpose
The Preparatory Committee statement to mark the commencement of the formation of the Coptic Parliament
"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand" (Mark 3-24)
The Preparatory Commission for the Coptic Parliament announces the commencement of its work, designed to form the Coptic Parliament which is an entity bringing together workers and activists, in the field of Coptic political, social and human rights, for individuals or organizations with a political rights framework. The Parliament will not interfere with the work of any organization but provides a legitimate framework and brings up the objectives of collective action.
The existence of a Coptic Parliament is crucial as it would fill a serious vulnerability gap which existed since the commencement of work relative to the Coptic issue, namely the non-existence of a political and legal legitimacy for the bodies elected by the Copts. This resulted in the inability of the existing organizations to demonstrate that they legitimately and legally represent the Copts in front of the various states and international organizations.
The aim of this Committee is to develop adequate mechanisms and proper preparation for the development of a Coptic Parliament, where all its cadres and institutions are chosen through elections, to achieve political and legal legitimacy. Consequently, the Preparatory Committee will cease its work after completion of the works' regulations, laws, requirements, the creation of an advanced electronic database for all the Copts globally, and the overseeing of the first free elections in the history of the Copts.
